Ben Kosky/Kilburn Times Interviews QPR's Much-Travelled Recent Signing, Curtis Davies - "Time for Curtis to settle down
HE'S spent most of his career on the move and, at nearly 29 years of age, John Curtis is searching for stability at Loftus Road.
Curtis, who signed for QPR at the end of last month, has now racked up nine clubs - and almost as many positions on the field - since he emerged through the ranks at Manchester United.
The tag of 'former Old Trafford starlet' is one that clings to a number of players, but Curtis observed: "I think I shook it off after about five clubs, so it's long gone now!
"I had a fantastic time at United and it's stood me in good stead for the rest of my career.
"Most of the clubs I've been at, I've said I'd like to settle down, but I see this as another chance.
"Hopefully I can do well and extend my contract after two years. I think we've got a fabulous team spirit here, some good players and a good team ethic as well.
"Right-back is my preferred position, but I've been deployed all over the place - centre-back, left midfield - never up front as yet but I'm looking to play in the hole, perhaps a free role behind the front two!"
Curtis made his Rangers debut in that favoured role on the right side of defence in their recent friendly against Celtic - and, despite being on the wrong end of a 5-1 scoreline, found it a far more enjoyable experience than his last visit to the Bush.
That had come two years earlier, when Curtis put through his own net as the Rs beat Nottingham Forest 2-1 to condemn them to League One.
But it was the Forest connection that ultimately brought about his recent switch to Loftus Road, with former room-mate Danny Cullip recommending the defender to Rangers boss John Gregory.
"Scoring an own goal and getting relegated on the same day - that was lovely!" Curtis recalled. "It's a little different playing for the home team at Loftus Road and having a few people watching.
"I spoke to Danny soon after he moved down to QPR and I knew he was delighted with it, so when John Gregory came calling, it wasn't much of a decision to make.
"The manager rang me directly and asked if I'd like to come down and have a chat. I was really impressed with what he had to say about the club and what he wants to do, and I signed straight away, simple as that."
Although Curtis sank into the third tier with Forest, the majority of his career has been spent at Championship level ever since he departed Old Trafford in 2000.
He won promotion with Blackburn the following year, as well as reaching play-off finals with Barnsley and Sheffield United, and has also served in the colours of Leicester, Portsmouth and Preston.
So can the versatile defender see his new club challenging at the top end of the division in the near future?
"I think football progresses every year and the Championship certainly hasn't stood still. There are some good teams and it's a very hard league to get out of.
"Last season this club spent a lot of time in the bottom three, so it'd be unrealistic to assume we're going to go from one extreme to another.
"I think a mid-table season of consolidation would be good and hopefully we can push on the season after that."
Push on, certainly... and Curtis hopes he won't be pushing off to club number 10 around the same time Kilburn Times

Lee Cook set to make his Fulham debut....Against QPR
Lee Cook has been left out of Fulham's squad for the Barclays Asia Trophy to ensure he is fit for the start of the season.
The winger is recovering from knee surgery and manager Lawrie Sanchez did not want to risk him in Hong Kong.
Fulham face Portsmouth today, and Sanchez revealed Cook, a £2.5million signing from Queens Park Rangers, is likely to make his debut against his former club at Loftus Road next month.
Sanchez said: "We expect him to play in the QPR friendly before the season starts

STEVE LOMAS
Irish Times - Worthington hints at Lomas return
Northern Ireland manager Nigel Worthington has not ruled out the possibility of Steve Lomas returning to the squad after a four-year absence.
Worthington believes the experienced midfielder can still do a job at international level - but he needs to find a club sooner rather than later.
Lomas, 33, is a free agent after leaving Coca-Cola Championship side QPR in the summer and won the last of his 44 caps in 2003.
Worthington is monitoring the player's situation ahead of his first match in charge - the Euro 2008 qualifier against Liechtenstein on August 22nd at Windsor Park.
The former Norwich boss, however, was impressed at the way Lomas performed in the recent friendly between a Northern Ireland select side and Everton.
"He was desperate to play in that game," said Worthington. "That was great for me and Roy Millar, who was in charge, to have someone of Steve's experience to call on.
"Perhaps Steve might be in the twilight of his career but I have a lot of time for him as he is a good professional.
"If he gets a club, has a good pre-season, gets fits and does well he will be in the hat...." Irish Times
