Padula Update....QPR "On This Day" - The Morgan Twins...Chris Woods...Ron Hunt...Simon Stainrod

-
- Congratulations to Gino Padula, whose Columbus Crewe last night defeated Chicago Fire 2-1, in the MLS Eastern Championship Final. Columbus Crew will play the MLS Final November 23 in California, the winners of the New York Red Bulls vs Real Salt Lake.

FLASHBACKS....

The Morgan Twins and Ron Hunt: Part of what made Queen's Park Rangers unique: None of them might fit into a "Best All Time QPR XI" - although Roger Morgan was a pretty good winger. But in the mid-to-late 1960s, they epitomized what QPR were. Hopefully some elements of the old QPR still remain - somewhere.

The Morgan Twins - Roger & Ian - Turn Sixty-Two
- Born November 14, 1946: Identical twins Roger and Ian Morgan were two of a handful of players who put that unique stamp on QPR in the 1966-1968 period. And the devestation fans felt when Roger was sold to Spurs in February 1969 for a then club record fee 100,000 pounds (at a time when the British transfer record was 150,000 pounds.) And Ian Morgan was left behind, with rumours of him joining his brother at Spurs, later.
And the first game Roger played for Spurs after his transfer: Against QPR!
While with Spurs, ROger played for the England U-21 team; Ian didn't. Ian eventually joined Watford in October 1973, for 10,000 pounds.
Both made their QPR debuts in the 1964/65 season. Ian a few weeks earlier. Roger played in the League Cup Final (and scored). Ian was a non-playing sub. In total: Roger Morgan made 200+ appearances for QPR, scoring 39 goals. Ian played almost 200 games, scoring 26 goals. Born

Ex-QPR & England Goalie, Chris Woods Turns 49
Born November 14, 1959, Woods was signed by Tommy Docherty from Nottingham Forest for 250,000 pounds - before he'd played a League game (although he had played a League Cup Final), Woods played a season and a half for QPR before Terry Venables sold him on to Norwich - probably Venables' biggest transfer mistake he made at QPR. (Venables then went out and bought John Burridge: Good but no England Goalie). After QPR, Woods played 43 times for England.

Ron Hunt's one and Only Goal for QPR
Rhirty-Eight Years ago, November 14, 1970: QPR Center Half, Ron Hunt, one of QPR's Heroes in their League Cup Win, scored his one and only goal for QPR (in some 250 games), in QPR's 1-1 draw at Sheffield United. (A QPR team, managed at the time by Les Allen, which contained Mike Kelly and Barry Bridges and Terry Venables, Martyn Busby, Rodney Marsh and so on). And a Sheffield United team, with Tony Currie. -
- re Ron Hunt - QPR's (small) Center Half/Center Back Born December 19, 1945. Hunt made his debut in December 1964 and played some 200+ games for QPR until 1972-3 when he forced to retire with a knee injury at 29. But of all his games, he is perhaps most famous for his role in QPR's third and winning goal in the 1967 League Cup Final when he collided with the WBA Goalie. (or as described in Wikipedia "In a fairy tale 2nd half, the underdogs stormed back.... In the closing minutes QPR centre half Ron Hunt went on a forward run and as he challenged the keeper for the ball it ran loose to Mark Lazarus to score the winning goal. -

Simon Stainrod's Hatrick
Twenty-Seven years ago today, November 14, 1981: Simon Stainrod scored his one-and- only hatrick for QPR - in QPR's 3-1 win away to Sheffield Wednesday. QPR at the time, were of course managed by Terry Venables.
A few months later, Stainrod was playing for QPR against Spurs at Wembley!
