Express and Star Wolves Abandon Leigertood Effort
- Wolves have moved on in their search for a central midfielder after failing with a bid of around £1million to tempt QPR into selling Mikele Leigertwood.
The club have other bids in for players and remain confident of strengthening their squad in the final 13 days of the transfer window.
Sources confirmed the offer from Molineux for 26-year-old Leigertwood, who has 18 months left on his contract, although Wolves have refused to confirm making a bid.
But the sum isn’t enough to persuade Rangers to sell the Enfield-born player, signed for £900,000 from Sheffield United in August 2007.
The arrival of Sunderland midfielder Liam Miller on loan at Loftus Road could see 6ft 1ins regular Leigertwood move on, despite captain Martin Rowlands now being out injured.
Wolves have had the former Wimbledon and Crystal Palace man in their sights for some time, as they seek to strengthen their central midfield options. But boss Mick McCarthy has switched his attentions beyond Leigertwood.
He is the third midfielder to drop off the Wolves radar, after McCarthy was also forced to abandon any designs on Bristol City’s Marvin Elliott and Watford’s John-Joe O’Toole.
Leigertwood fitted Wolves’ profile of knowing his way around the Championship. Playing the last 10 games in 2003-04, he helped Palace gain promotion to the Premier League before adding 23 games in the top flight the following season..."
The 33-year-old is now reportedly attracting interest from Swindon, as well as their League One rivals Northampton, after a loan move to Walsall fell through before Christmas. Express and Star
