Fulham Chronicle/Paul Warburton - QPR head fight to sign Tamika Mkandawire
- QPR head a four-way fight for Leyton Orient centre-half Tamika Mkandawire.
The Malawi-born defender was the subject of a £200,000 bid by Millwall and former Rs assistant manager Kenny Jackett back in January but O’s chairman Barry Hearn rejected the bid, deeming the defender too important to his side’s relegation battle, and slapped a £500,000 price tag on him.
However, the towering defender is now out of contract, and waiting in the wings are Rangers, newly promoted Millwall, Preston and Paulo Sousa’s Swansea, although the Hoops’ financial muscle means they can offer a larger signing-on-fee, and a better wage package than Jackett and the others.
Mkandawire, 27, could be a long-term replacement for Damion Stewart, three years older that the former West Brom trainee, who got his league career into gear with Hereford.
The transfer target represented the England semi-professional team twice during his three years with the Bulls before his move to East London in 2007.
Martin Ling, then Orient manager, had pursued his man for a year and had a £60,000 bid rejected before Mkandawire made the move for free having seen his contract expire.
Should manager Neil Warnock secure Mkandawire’s services it will be seen as another understated and hopefully astute signing as Rs hope to mount a series promotion challenge come August" Fulham Chronicle
