QPR break club record for Zelic Queen's Park Rangers made a club-record signing yesterday when the Australian international Ned Zelic moved from Borussia Dortmund for pounds 1.25m. The three- year deal exceeds the pounds 1.1m Rangers invested in Reading's Simon Osborn earlier this month.
- Ray Wilkins, the QPR manager, is hoping Zelic's work permit is granted in time for the start of the season. He said: "He's a player of immense talent who will add a bit of quality to that we already have at the club. We're very fortunate in that he is versatile as an egg - he can play at the back and in midfield; he's a good user of the ball and he has a physical presence."
- Wilkins also denied speculation that the England Under-21 winger Trevor Sinclair is to leave Loftus Road. Gerry Francis was reportedly interested in the player he bought in his time as QPR manager, but Wilkins said: "Trevor Sinclair won't be going anywhere - to Tottenham or anywhere else." - Independent

- Flasback: July 4 2008: The QPR - Bahraini Connection

LONDON-based Queens Park Rangers Football Club (QPR) is to scout and coach young talented Bahraini footballers following the signing of a three-year sponsorship deal with Gulf Air yesterday.
The partnership will see the introduction of a local youth football scouting programme and various community-based initiatives in Bahrain and London.
Each programme will be specifically tailored to promote the development of grass roots football in Bahrain and promote Bahraini sporting talent internationally.
Gulf Air chief executive officer Bjšrn Naf said that under the sponsorship agreement, QPR would scout out young talented Bahraini footballers and coach them.
He said QPR would hold friendlies with Bahrain's national team in both countries and invite them to championship matches in the UK.
"Maybe they will find the future Beckham in Bahrain," he said at a Press conference held at Somerset House in Central London.
"Our aim is to have a Bahraini playing for QPR within three years, or even have a Bahraini captain - why not."
Gulf Air sponsorship and events manager Jon Barnett said QPR would run a football talent initiative in Bahrain schools and universities and coach them through football clinics.
"It's about finding a way to spot and grow talents and we hope Bahrainis will hold the championship league one day," he said.
"We will use the profile and heritage of QPR in Bahrain to make sure that Bahrain benefits. We hope it will be a success story."
QPR deputy managing director Ali Russell said the club would also use football to address the needs of the community, such as health, literacy and numeracy.
QPR will carry the airline's branding on all team kit, including first team home, away and third shirts.
Gulf Air will also be marketed during matches and signing opportunities.
Gulf Air has 12 tickets and a VIP box for every match and will use this as an opportunity to promote the airline and Bahrain to guests and business partners.
Mr Naf said Gulf Air's sponsorship of the club was born out of talks with QPR Holdings Limited chairman Flavio Briatore during the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in April.
He would not disclose the sponsorship amount, except to say it was a significant amount that would not be paid in one lump sum.
"This is a very exciting deal for Gulf Air and people of Bahrain," said Mr Naf.
"Like QPR, Gulf Air is building a phenomenal success story with a powerful global brand that has a world class leading product.
"Bahrain and the UK have long had strong political and financial ties so we are proud to continue this tradition.
"As a national carrier, Gulf Air is proud to fly the flag of Bahrain around the globe and through our association with QPR, we are confident that we are helping educate a wider audience about Business Friendly Bahrain and its award-winning airline.
"This deal offers a multitude of business and sporting opportunities for the people of Bahrain and we are working with QPR to roll out a variety of exciting initiative aimed at supporting grass roots football in Bahrain."
Mr Naf said Gulf Air's sponsorship of QPR would have no impact on the Formula One sponsorship.
He said the airline's sponsorship contract of the Bahrain Grand Prix would conclude at the 2009 Formula One and an announcement with regards whether the support would continue would be announced later this year.
Mr Briatore welcomed Gulf Air's partnership with QPR and hoped with the help of the airline and other partners to take QPR from the championship league to the premiership.
"It's a very competitive sport so we need the help of our partners. Gulf Air and its management believe in our project," he said.
"QPR will do the best as possible. We want to consolidate the club and go up."
Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone, a major stakeholder in QPR, gave a nod to the deal.
"We are very pleased to have the support of Gulf Air in helping QPR achieve another move forward," he said.
QPR Holdings Limited vice-chairman Amit Bhatia said it was another landmark day for the club and said QPR was delighted to have Gulf Air as an important strategic partner which shared QPR's vision of excellence and progress.
The agreement between the club and Gulf Air is the latest in a number of high profile sponsorship deals secured by Queens Park Rangers since the club's recent takeover.
Earlier this year, Queens Park Rangers secured Santander as the club's official financial partner and established a five-year multimillion pound deal with Lotto Sport Italia, as the club's official kit supplier. Gulf News
