QPR's Miller reveals lonely birthday

ISHMAEL Miller spent the first part of his 24th birthday in a lonely hotel room – and the rest of it as a QPR hero in front of 18,000 fans. The striker, who hit the only goal of the game against Leicester in the 88th minute, would have run out of breath long before he got through half the cakes and candles from grateful Hoops supporters had they known.

Miller’s first hit for Rangers was a welcome relief for the WBA loanee who had team-mates hot foot down from the Midlands for a belated birthday dinner.

He said: “I’m in a hotel on my own, so I only got a few calls from friends and families earlier on.

“And I scored on my debut for Albion, but I’m glad I got this one. I’ve been promoted twice and hope this is third time lucky.

“My hamstring has felt a bit tight in the last few days, but boss Neil Warnock has guided me back. A lot of people have said I’ve got a smile on my face now after coming to QPR.”

Miller also came face-to-face again with Leicester boss Sven-Goran Eriksson who had the striker when both were at Manchester City – but decided to let him go on loan to WBA before the deal was made permanent.

Miller explained: “I had a chat with Sven about me going back to City – but decided to stay at WBA.

I’m happy here at QPR but it’s too soon to talk about a switch.”

Supersub Ishmael Miller celebrated his birthday with 15,000 QPR fans after scoring a dramatic late winner.

Arriving as an 86th minute substitute, the striker quickly controlled a deft Wayne Routledge pass with his first touch since coming on for a disappointing Adel Taarabt.

With Sol Bamba in close attendance Miller still had plenty to do, but coolly finished past Leicester keeper Ricardo to unleash wild celebrations at a packed Loftus Road.

And with Miller new to London and still staying in a hotel after his loan move from West Brom in January, the result was the perfect 24th birthday present.

He said: “I’m in London on my own. It was a bit of a lonely birthday for me. I just had a few messages and a few calls.

“I’m going to have a very quiet night. We have a big game on Tuesday so I’m just going to go for a meal with a few of the boys.

“It’s great to get my first goal and great to get three points - these are a massive three points.

“A few of the other teams that are chasing promotion have dropped points as well so it was a massive day.

“I have been promoted twice with West Brom so hopefully it can be a third time here. We are looking strong and it is in our own hands.”

QPR were fortunate to take all three points in front of their biggest crowd of the season after Leicester looked the more likely winners for much of the afternoon.

Hoops keeper Paddy Kenny produced a stunning save after back-pedalling rapidly to avoid being embarrassed by a smart Yakubu lob, the on-loan Everton striker also going close from the following corner.

And Foxes substitute Martin Waghorn had a great chance but missed the target before Miller’s decisive intervention.

Injuries had meant a stop-start season for the big frontman until his arrival with the Championship pace-setters, but he reckons Rangers boss Neil Warnock has already got him flying again.

Miller said: “He has been great. He inspires the place and makes us feel we are untouchable.

“That’s what I needed after being injured for so long. I needed to get my confidence and my performance back to where it should be.

“It has been perfect so far. I was happy at West Brom but a lot of people - family and friends - have said I’ve got a smile on my face now.”

Warnock was grinning too after the match, and joined the players on the pitch to celebrate the win with fans in the stands.

He said: “When you have got the adrenalin flowing after a result like that I can’t tell you how high I feel.

“It’s an amazing feeling - and it’s been like that all year. I just love everything about the club.”

The victory puts Rangers eight clear at the top of the Championship after their rivals all dropped points.

Leicester slipped to ninth place, five points behind Leeds in the final play-off spot.

But boss Sven Goran Eriksson, who tried to sign Miller on loan earlier this season before an injury scuppered the move, believes their rewards will come if they keep putting in performances like Saturday’s.

He said: “It’s important we don’t lose confidence. We have had three games now with only one point, playing rather good football.

“I think today, considering who we were meeting away, we were good. I think the players should be proud of the performance.”

Leicester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson rues one that got away as Ishmael Miller strikes for Queens Park Rangers

Sven-Goran Eriksson does not like missing out on a good deal. And, at Loftus Road, he was left rueing one that fell through a couple of months ago.
Sven-Goran Eriksson rues the one that got away as Ishmael Miller strikes late for Queens Park Rangers

As Ishmael Miller, one of Eriksson’s former players at Manchester City, came off the bench to immediately score a late winner, the Swede remembered negotiations that took place this winter.

Eriksson tried to sign Miller for Leicester before the striker eventually joined Queens Park Rangers on loan from West Bromwich Albion on Jan 21.

This disappointment would have added to his frustration that Miller was the man to defeat Leicester in a contest that had been excruciatingly tight beforehand.

When QPR’s gifted playmaker Adel Taarabt departed to be replaced by Miller, just two minutes before the end, most of the away fans would have been relieved. But Sven knew better. “No surprise,” shrugged Eriksson. “I know him. I tried to take him to Leicester. He was injured. If he hadn’t been, he would have come.”

When questioned about Miller’s future prospects, Eriksson responded by asking: “Is he on loan for the rest of the season?” After being told yes (until late-April at least), the Swede said, with a smile: “If he wants to come to us, he can.”

Miller was non-committal about his future but saluted Eriksson.

“He is a great manager who really helped me,” said the former England Under-21 striker, who was at Eastlands from 2005 to 2008. The goal was a rousing way to celebrate his 24th birthday. “My first touch was controlling the ball and the second was putting it in,” Miller said. “It’s a great feeling.”

Manager Neil Warnock hailed his side’s “fantastic result”. “Leicester were as good as we’ve played this season, and if we’d lost or drawn I couldn’t have complained,” he said. “It was a great spectacle.”

Ailing Routledge delivers the right tonic for QPR
Queen's Park Rangers 1 Leicester City 0

By Glenn Moore at Loftus Road
Monday, 7 March 2011

The margins of success are slim in the Championship as this tale of two substitutes underlined. Three-quarters into a tight but entertaining match Sven Goran Eriksson sent Martyn Waghorn into the fray. The striker's first act was to rob Matt Connolly and advance on goal only to shoot narrowly over.

Twenty minutes later, a draw seemingly inevitable after Waghorn had missed an even better chance, Neil Warnock brought on Ishmael Miller. His first involvement was to run on to a through ball from Wayne Routledge and score.

Warnock revealed it had been a toss-up whether to put on Miller or Tommy Smith. With the dugout divided, the deciding vote went to assistant manager Mick Jones in the stand. He said Miller. The rest was hysteria as the biggest crowd of the season at Loftus Road celebrated Miller's goal, and the subsequent victory, with unbridled joy.

An important win over the division's form team became even more significant with the three clubs immediately below Rangers all losing. That extended QPR's lead to eight points with 11 matches to play. Fifteen years after they dropped out of the elite amid such financial distress that they subsequently fell into the third tier, a return to the top flight seems certain.

Only complacency, or dramatic loss of form, can halt them now but neither is likely in a dressing room overseen by Warnock and including battle-scarred veterans such as Shaun Derry, Clint Hill and Paddy Kenny, as well as flair players like Adel Taarabt and Akos Buzsaky. It makes for a well-balanced unit that hung in against an often superior Leicester side to record an 11th successive unbeaten league match.

That resilience was highlighted by Routledge, who was sent home from training on Friday with a bag of antibiotics and told to get fit for tomorrow's match at Millwall. Instead he rang Warnock on Saturday and said he wanted to play. The winger proceeded to nullify the threat of Kyle Naughton, as well as lay on the goal. "I said to him in the dressing room in front of the rest of the lads, 'That was a team performance you put in for us there'," said Warnock of his loanee. "When you've got lads like that, who do more than they should do, it shows you how much character you've got in your squad."

Defeat was hard on Leicester, who had the game's most polished performers in Jeffrey Bruma and Andy King. Poor finishing and Kenny's keeping denied them victory and Eriksson consoled himself by saying: "If we play like that in the remaining 11 games we'll have a good chance."

No one will fancy facing Leicester, who were in the relegation zone when Eriksson took over in October, should they reach the play-offs. QPR were also threatened with the drop when Warnock took over 12 months ago but while it has been quite a year the champagne remains on ice, for a few weeks at least.
