Jacob Murtagh and Paul Warburton /Ealing Gaette - QPR boss plays down Crouch move

QPR boss Neil Warnock will roll out the red carpet if Peter Crouch decides to join the club - but the England forward needs to take a massive wage cut of around 70k-a-week first.

The Spurs striker made his first steps to the big time when he was at Loftus Road 10 years ago, and admitted last night he would like to return someday before he hangs up his boots.

Crouch said: "I've got a lot of affection for the club, and loved playing down there when I was young. I certainly wouldn't rule out ever playing for QPR again."

However, despite speculation this week linking the Ealing-born-and-raised forward with Hoops, Warnock reckons Crouch's near £90k-a-week is so far out of reach - it's not worth picking up the phone.

He said: "If Crouchy wants to fit into the QPR wage structure, I'd welcome with open arms. But something tells me that isn't going to happen."

Crouch insists his boyhood heroes will need to get new faces if they are to survive a testing first season back in the top flight after 15 years.

"It's always difficult as a club coming up," he said. "They deserved to win the Championship but with the level in the Premier League they will have to buy a few players and hope some of those players who got them up adapt quickly.

"It's so difficult because every year the teams who come up are expected to go down. Hopefully they do it. They've got good resources and can hopefully add to the squad they've got." Ealing Gazette
